The contract you make when you join one of the broadband providers or mobile broadband providers varies from provider to provider. Most providers require a 12 month broadband subscription to their service although is this isn't what you want then you can get it so you only pay monthly and can end the contract at anytime.

As most of the larger broadband providers now offer free connection and free broadband modems/routers it would not be financially possible for them to do this if they were only going to keep a customers custom for just 1 month.
