Broadband - Broadband Guide - Broadband phones

Broadband phones are becoming more and more popular. Broadband phones are used in conjunction with VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) technology to allow users to make voice calls over the internet.

Generally VoIP calls made with a broadband phone to another VoIP and broadband phone are free and users charged when they call a standard telephone line from a broadband phone. The charges are still usually less than you are charged from a standard telephone call.

To make best use of a broadband phone it is advisable to have broadband although this isn't a must. Broadband will help give a better quality of call made over the Internet

One of the biggest advantages to broadband phones is the cost aspect. As broadband phones utilizing VoIP technology don't travel through the telecom provider and instead travel through the Internet you avoid many charges. This means that especially on long distance calls broadband phones can save allot of money. Again, if you imagine calling someone with a broadband phone in Australia and they use the same broadband phone supplier as you then you could well be able to talk to that person for free!

There are some points users of broadband phone technology must be made aware of to give a balanced view.

As Broadband phones use the Internet then a loss of connection or problems with the broadband provider could result in the phone not working. Also a power cut cut also result in the phone not being able to work as it will rely on the computer being functional which will require power.

Also related to the Internet are viruses, a virus could also attack or cause problems to a broadband phone.

Although calls made using broadband phones are good you may still find that there is some distortion meaning the calls are not 100% clear all the time.

Emergency calls to 999 (UK) or 911 (USA) are not as easy for the emergency services to trace. With standard telephone calls the emergency services can route the call to a location to help speed things up, with broadband phones however using the Internet this is not as easy so a user may be required to give an address or location that does take longer.
