Sky to offer Broadband only service called "Picnic Broadband"?
5th September 2007
BSkyB are reportedly looking at possibly launching a stand-alone broadband only service that is likely to be called "Picnic Broadband".
Currently SKY Broadband is only available to Sky customers who have a Sky TV subscription and this in turn this limits part of the broadband market for them.
Sky has pushed its "See, Speak, Surf" campaign hard since last year to offer customers a bundled service of products and it has proved extremely popular and successful. However Sky may now want to extend its broadband reach further and be able to target all potential broadband customers.
If Sky do start to offer a broadband only service this will then mean that they are targeting the full broadband market and not just part of it like they currently are by only offering a bundled service. This will put them in direct competition will all the UK broadband providers, including the likes of BT, Tiscali and Skys big rivals Virgin Media.
Any broadband only customers that Sky sign up on a broadband only deal are then available for Sky to try to sign them up to their other services which in an ideal world is what Sky would prefer.
There is no official word from BSkyB about the plans to launch "Picnic Broadband" and there are no dates either so it is a case of waiting to see if this goes ahead but we feel that it is very likely we will see this in the future.
