Broadband - Broadband News - VoIP providers have to support 999 calls

VoIP providers have to support 999 calls

5th December 2007

From the 8th September 2008 VoIP providers will be required to allow users to make 999 / 112 emergency calls.
Research last year by Ofcom showed that 78% of UK households who were with a VoIP Provider that did not support 999 calls thought that they could make emergency calls or did not know.

Ofcom rule to make VoIP providers support 999 callsAlthough most users will have access to another phone to make the call, the vital seconds lost could potentially make a huge difference to someone in need of emergency treatment or help.

VoIP services excluded from the ruling are those that offer a "Click To Call" service on websites and also international only services.

This is definitely a move forward, especially if VoIP is going to play a bigger role in our lives and the popularity of VoIP is only going to increase in time.

The full ruling can be read at the Ofcom site.
