Cable & Wireless have announced today that they are cutting 150 jobs as they pull out of residential broadband with Bulldog Broadband and instead focus on wholesale customers. The job losses are expected to be in the sales & marketing areas of Bulldog.
Although the focus of Bulldog & Cable & Wireless has changed, customers who have residential broadband will still receive the broadband service's from Bulldog.
Bulldog's aim is to provide unbundled wholesale broadband to the major broadband service providers.
John Pluthero, Group Managing Director, UK said: "As the market leader in full local loop unbundling, we have been looking at the best way to maximise the return on our investment. We believe that a wholesaling approach to the consumer and SME market is the best way to optimise our return from our unique local loop network capability."
The move could be a result of the aggressive "free broadband forever" launch from the Carphone Warehouse's TalkTalk, who announced earlier this week that they had received 340,000 new customers after their service which far exceeded their expectations, there is also the expected launch of SKY Broadband who are likely to follow the route of TalkTalk and offer a free broadband package tied in with other services.
