Virgin Media has lost around 70,000 customers with 40,000 customers having moved to Sky in the last 3 months. This comes after they lost out being able to show Sky's basic channels to their customers, channels such as Sky News and Sky 1. This resulted in hit series such as Lost and 24 no longer being available to Virgin Media customers.
Virgin Media are the UK’s largest Cable operator after it completed the buyout & merger of NTL:Telewest in February this year.
What is likely to worry Virgin even more is that in the same period Sky added 90,000 new TV customers. Overall the results are unlikely to have come as a huge surprise to Virgin who will have known that losing the Sky basic channels would be a big loss but they are moving to offer new exclusive channels.
Virgin are not lying down, they have things in the pipeline that could well entice customers to stay or join up with them as they have a deal with Setanta Sports to offer live sports such as Premiership matches which will be included in the cost for their high-end users. Also on the cards is the introduction of 20MB broadband to be made available.
