BT chairman Sir Christopher Bland has told FT.com that they are looking into maybe installing fibre optic as far as the street kerb meaning that customers could well receive broadband download speeds of 40-50MB a second!
This is a huge increase in speed but still short of the 100MB that is on offer in places such as Japan through their fibre optic networks.
How the fibre network would work is laying fibre optic cable between BT exchanges and the street cabinets that premises are connected to. This is also known as VDSL2 or very high-speed digital subscriber line 2.
The issue with fibre optic cable is the costs involved with it, it is not cheap but is definitely the way to replace the ageing copper wires that are currently used, whether or not BT do take the plunge and install this is one we have to hope for, but currently ADSL2+ technology which can offer download speeds up to 24MB is the next milestone for the UK to all start receiving.
