UK to have 21 million broadband customers by end of 2012

21st November 2007

Point Topic has released their latest report on their forecasts for the UK broadband market.
They predict a steady increase in broadband subscribers that will see the UK have 21 million broadband customers by the end of 2012 of which 19 million will be home lines and 2 million for business.

Already the slow down in new subscribers has started to take place, with around 330,000 new subscribers it the 2nd quarter of the year and 550,000 in the 3rd quarter of the year which is around half of the growth that was seen in the two quarters before this.

One of the biggest reasons for this slow down is that the remaining customers on dial-up internet access is now quite small so there is not as many left to convert to broadband and many of those are reluctant to switch due to not using the internet enough to warrant having to pay more.

Point Topic however do forecast there to be an improvement on the last two quarters for those homes and businesses that currently don't have any Internet. They predict that about 4% of the remaining homes without internet will get internet each year and 6.5% of businesses without internet will get it, with Point Topic forecasting that by the end of 2012 that 73% of homes and 85% of businesses will have a broadband connection.
