Broadband - Broadband News - Fibre to be laid in UK sewers

Fibre to be laid in UK sewers

23rd January 2008

Either Bournemouth, Northampton or Dundee are the likely locations to become the first "Fibre Town" in the UK as a North Wales firm call H20 Networks looks to install fibre through the sewers.
Installing it via the sewers will mean that allot of time and money can be saved as road digging that is expensive and disruptive won't need to be done as the nations sewers are already there.
The Focus (Fibre Optical Cable Underground Sewer) Network as it has been named would mean broadband speeds of around 100Mb.

Mr Thomas, From H20 Networks said:

While deploying traditional fibre over a 2km area would be six to 12 months in the planning. We can do it in four hours

An average town of 75,000 homes would cost someone deploying traditional fibre between £50m and £70m. We can do it for 20 to 30% of that

Claims like this make positive reading and H20 are in talks with media partners and broadband providers to help with the roll out and make this technology available nationwide.
