The governments Digital Britain report wants 3G mobile operators to help reach those in remote places receive a minimum of 2Mb broadband
2012 is no longer just the year that the UK will host the Olympics but also the date that the government want the whole of the UK to be able to receive a minimum of 2Mb broadband connection according to the Digital Britain report.
Some remote areas are unable to receive broadband due to being too far away from the telephone exchange and it not being cost effective for any fibre broadband providers (Virgin Media) to specifically install to their location just for them so the government is wanting mobile providers with a 3G licence to expand their coverage so it matches the coverage of 2G technology.
Also mentioned in the report was that around 60-65% of the country could expect the roll out of next generation broadband to be justified which should mean the roll out of fibre optic cable. Fibre broadband can deliver speeds of 50Mb and faster, already we can see that from Virgin broadband who have a 50Mb broadband service being rolled out.
The government do need to address this issue as in a few years 2Mb broadband is going to be looked upon like most look at Dial up internet now, as slow and past it so the UK needs to work to move forward and also get next generation broadband being rolled out!
2Mb may be sufficient to use the internet now but in years to come it may no longer be so and is stillg oging to have those stuck on those speeds left way behind the majority who are getting much faster speeds!
