Virgin Media have started their fight back against Sky by announcing that they are to set up their own Sports News channel with Setanta Sports.
Sky have had a dominant position in the sports television market, especially with football but Setanta have managed to get the rights to show 46 exclusive Premiership matches this season and also picking up Championship, League 1, League 2 and Scottish Premier League matches too meaning that Sky does not have everything for themselves.
The tie up between Virgin Media and Setanta Sports will mean the 3 million Virgin Media customers will have access to the new sports news channel for no extra cost and those customers on the "XL" package from Virgin Media will also receive all the 46 Premiership matches, other customers on other packages can receive these for just £8 per month. Setanta say that Virgin subscribers will be able to view up to 250 showcase sporting events per year!
Virgin lost the rights to show Sky basic channels earlier this year when they felt Sky wanted to charge them too much for the rights to show these channels, a move that Virgin Media thought was as a result of both the companies fighting hard for broadband customers.
