Sheffield latest place to get their sewers lined with fibre

Sheffield has become the  latest place to start having H20 start to deploy their super fast fibre broadband into their sewers.
H20 Networks deploy fibre optic networks in the sewers to help reduce costs by not having to dig up roads to lay their cable. For the Sheffield project they will lay their fibre in a 15km ring around the city which will then link up to another fibre network already laid.

The H20 fibre networks are able to deliver broadband at speeds up to 100Mb which is substantially faster than the 40Mb that BT say that their own fibre network will be able to deliver.
The work in Sheffield is expected to be completed in September and following that H20 will continue to roll out their service to other cities across the UK.

A third of UK not Bundling their broadband

Around about a third of UK broadband users are not bundling their communication services meaning that they could miss out on savings of up to £230 per year.

A survey done by broadbandchoices.co.uk had 10,000 respondents and found that about 30% of them were not bundling their broadband with any digital TV or telephone services.
29% of those who responded didn’t know if bundles actually saved them money and 12% believed that bundles didn’t save them any money.

Of the 30% who did not have a broadband bundle a huge 60% of these had not changed their broadband provider in the last 4 years meaning that they could be missing out on far superior broadband deals.

The price of bundling broadband with other services such as digital TV and telephone has driven down the cost as the broadband provider fight hard to attract customers, the main broadband providers who offer broadband bundles are BT, Virgin Media, Sky and Tiscali.

BT start Fibre To The Cabinet pilot

BT have started their pilot test of fibre broadband in parts of North London and Wales. The two areas chosen to start receiving Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC) are Muswell Hill and Whitchurch.

fibre optic cable BT start Fibre To The Cabinet pilotThe trial services will be available via BT Openreach which means that other broadband providers, including Sky and O2 Broadband will also be included in offering the FTTC to their customers.

Both of the locations that the pilot schemes are being tested at have over 15,000 premises (residential and business) and 100 roadside cabinets.

It is envisaged that customers will receive broadband download speeds of up to 40Mb and upload speeds of 5Mb.

Fibre To The Cabinet involves laying fibre optic cable from the telephone exchange to the street side cabinet and then using the  existing copper lines to connect the cabinet to the house.
FTTC is the cheaper alternative to FTTH (Fibre To The Home) which involves taking the fibre optic cable from the telephone exchange right to the house which also offers the fastest speeds.

£25 if you cancel your BT Broadband

Any BT Broadband customers who want to end their use of BT Broadband and not switch to another broadband provider will be charged £25, even if they are at the end of their contract.

The £25 charge is only applied to those customers who end their contract with BT, which includes those customers who have completed the minimum contract length with BT, and don’t request to be migrated to another broadband provider with a MAC code.

This charge has increased from £18.11 last month and was spotted and reported by PC Pro magazine.

BT say that it is a technical charge and is only charged to cover this when the correct migration process isn’t used. However there is no charge should a customer move home and BT are unable to supply a service there.

During these recessional times when money is tight it seems a fairly high charge for customers to have to pay if they are having to cancel their broadband due to not being able to afford it any longer for example.

Latest set of broadband speed test results unsurprisingly show fibre broadband leading the way

The latest monthly broadband speed test results have been released for the month of June from broadband comparison website broadband.co.uk.
As is the trend with the previous results we yet again see a slight increase in the average broadband speed that we receive, with this time the average speed being 4.34Mb which is up 0.092 Mb from 4.248 Mb in May.
There is also a tiny increase in the upload speed which now stands at 0.433 Mb.

Virgin Media top the charts showing an average broadband speed of 6.135 Mb, but as they run their own fibre broadband network they are able to offer much faster speeds than the other broadband providers who are still using ADSL and ADSL2+ technology. The headline deal from Virgin Media offers 50Mb broadband!

The second fastest broadband provider is once again O2 Broadband (who also own Be Broadband), however their average broadband speed actually fell very slightly last month to 5.632 Mb, although their upload speed has a very healthy average of 0.748 Mb, which is hugely faster then their next nearest rival, TalkTalk, who have an upload speed of 0.481 Mb.
O2 are an LLU operator and use ADSL2+ technology which means they have advertised maximum speeds of up to 20Mb.

Once again it was AOL broadband who performed slowest knocking up an average broadband speed of just 2.143 Mb.

To test the speed your broadband works at you need to use a free and simple broadband speed test that will show your download and upload speeds so you can see how you fair.

The broadband providers tested are the 10 largest and most users broadband providers which is why some of the smaller ones don’t feature in the results.

BT say 50p broadband tax not enough to cover everywhere with fibre

The 50p per month levy to be placed on all fixed copper phones won’t be enough to give total coverage of the UK with fibre broadband according to BT.

The “broadband tax” is to be charged for all premises that have a fixed copper line and was announced in the recently published Digital Britain Report.

The director of strategy at BT, Liv Garfield, said that she thinks even with the levy that there will still be a proportion of the UK where the fibre broadband won’t reach to. She thinks that it will help them to achieve around 80%-85% coverage and that 100% coverage is impossible.

The 50p per month (£6 per year) levy will raise between £150m-£175m per year that will be put in to the pot to fund the roll out of the fibre optic network into the hard to reach and remote areas of the UK.

BT have already started the roll out of their new fibre optic network and expect that by March 2010 there to be 1.5 million premises who will be able to connect via the fibre network.

Vodafone to buy T-Mobile UK?

Vodafone could be  looking over acquiring rival mobile phone and mobile broadband rival T-Mobile UK if reports today are to be believed.

t mobile broadband Vodafone to buy T Mobile UK?It is reported that the owners of the German based Deusch Telecom, the owners of T-Mobile UK have instructed JP Morgan to approach Vodafone to see if they would like to bid for the mobile phone operator.

This is likely to stir the interest of the other UK mobile operators and potentially start a bidding war with the likes of O2, Orange and Virgin all potentially being interested.

If Vodafone were to acquire T-Mobile UK then it would shoot them well in front as the leading mobile operator in the UK with around 40% of the market share.
Although Vodafone is the largest mobile operator in the world, currently here in the UK they have 25% of the market, O2 have the largest share with 27% and T-Mobile have 15%.

Carphone Warehouse given OK for Tiscali takeover

The Carphone Warehouse has been given the go ahead to complete it’s buy out of the UK arm of Tiscali by EU authorities.

The takeover is worth £236 million which is greatly needed by Tiscali who have a huge mountain of debt that they need to pay back.
With this acquisition it will take The Carphone Warehouses total broadband customer base to around 4.25 million making it the largest UK residential broadband provider alongside it’s other broadband entities such as TalkTalk Broadband and AOL Broadband.

The European Commission who looked into the takeover concluded that it would not damage competition in the UK, and with other big broadband providers such as BT and Virgin Media there is enough big competition in the UK.
