BT to double Fibre To The Home availability offering 100Mb

BT is to more than double the number of homes and businesses that will be able to receive it’s fastest FTTH (Fibre To The Home) broadband.

BT’s Fibre To The Home (or Fibre To The Premise as BT call it) will be the fastest broadband BT will offer with speeds up to 100Mb and is to be made available now to 2.5 million premises and not the 1 million as originally planned. The move comes as BT have findings that it is going to cost far less to deploy than they had originally anticipated meaning that even more people will be able to benefit from it.

BT will be deploying Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC) elsewhere and the hope is that around 10 million homes and businesses will have a fibre broadband connections by 2012. FTTC is expected to deliver broadband speeds of 40Mb.

BT has cut the costs of FTTH by moving away more from having to dig up roads to using existing underground ducts where copper wires are already running, they are also planning on using telegraph poles to run the fibre optic cables between these, again which takes away the expensive cost of digging up roads.

BT has also updated the speeds and prices that communications providers will pay to use BT’s Generic Ethernet Access over Fibre to the Cabinet (GEA-FTTC) that will deliver broadband at 40Mb download and 10Mb upload, this is an increase from 5Mb upload speeds and won’t cost the providers any more. The wholesale price to the providers is £88.80 per year.

England v Ukraine football match to be shown on Internet, is your broadband speed up to it

This weekends World Cup Qualifier game for England is only going to be available over the internet, but there are worries if the UK’s broadband is up to the job or not!

The game between the Ukraine and England can be watch by going to www.ukrainevengland.com for a price of £4.99 for those who sign up early enough. The reason the game has been set to be shown this way is because of the TV company Setanta, who had the rights for the game, going belly up. This meant that the rights were passed onto someone else and they decided to have the game streamed live online.

The ewporry for many fans is that tehy won’t get a decent stream of the match and there will be worry that the broadband connection could cause parts of the game to be missed if it loses connection or if the play is fast the image could appear jerky and not smooth.

The best advice we can give those looking to pay for the game is to test your broadband speed and see if you have a good healthy broadband speed before you pay to watch the game. If you are living in very rural areas and your telephone exchange is not close by then you may struggle to pick the game up so it runs seamlessly, use our free broadband speed test to check your broadband speed.

We woudl suggest that you want to have a minimum of a reliable 2Mb connection if you are wanting to watch the game via your broadband connection. What is important to remember is that although you may be signed up to a “up to 8Mb” broadband package you are unlikely to be receiving broadband at that speed to we encourage you to test your broadband speed in advance to see what your actual broadband speed achieved is.

Mobile broadband to hit 3 billion users by 2012 but can the networks cope?

It is predicted that by 2012 there will be more than one billion mobile broadband users across the world.

Despite this showing that b is going to grow massively there are claims from some of the European mobile networks that the number of mobile broadband users already is affecting their networks!

Ofcom reported that by March 2009 there was three million homes in the UK that were using mobile broadband showing how the popularity of this type of broadband has hugely increased in popularity. So while us as customers are asking for faster and more reliable speeds the mobile network providers are also trying to have to increase the coverage and quality of their networks.

The extra strain that mobile broadband puts on the mobile network providers can be seen from what one French telecoms provider, SFR, estimate that using mobile broadband users 450 times more bandwidth than someone talking on a mobile phone.

The increasing use of Smartphones has helped increase the popularity of mobile broadband and with more and more people wanting to access the Internet on the go this will only keep on increasing.

O2 in Next-Generation mobile broadband trials

The parent company of O2, Telefonica, has announced that they are to start trials of next-generation mobile broadband technology in 6 countries, one of which will be the UK.

O2 in Next Generation mobile broadband trialsThe next-generation technology called Long Term Evolution (LTE) when at it’s peak can reach speeds of up to 340Mb which is hugely faster than what most mobile broadband operators offer as a maximum of 7.2Mb currently. In reality as the connection is shared with other users it is expected that a reliable 2-5Mb mobile broadband connection will be achievable.

As the LTE works on 3G technology there is already work on the next replacement for it to work on 4G technology that will be able to reach speeds of up to 1Gb.
These developments and the room for increasing the speed make LTE and mobile broadband ever more popular. If speeds can reach anyway near the advertised top speeds we will genuinely have a viable alternative for fixed line broadband, even when the fibre broadband has been rolled out as that will offer a maximum speed of 40Mb with BT or currently 50Mb with Virgin Media, although these broadband speeds are also likely to rise in the future.

UK lagging well behind in world broadband

Britain has come dragging it’s heels into either 25th or 31st place depending on how the results are taken for broadband in the world, with countries like Latvia, Lithuania and Romania all coming higher up the list than us.

The results from the survey that was done by Oxford University and sponsored by Cisco said that the broadband in the UK only meets the needs for today and not for the future.

The difference between South Korea who top the league and the UK is that while we have our Digital Britain report that said that there should be a minimum universal broadband speed in the UK of 2Mb by 2012 the South Korean government has promised a universal speed of up to 1Gb by 2012!

The “Broadband Quality Score” was worked out by combining the download speed, upload speed and the latency.

Hopefully the investment in fibre broadband that BT are currently doing will bring us back more into contention with other countries round the world.

The average broadband speed achieved globally was 4.75Mb with an average upload speed of 1.3Mb, it is thought that in the future the average download speed will need to be 11.25Mb and an average upload speed of 5Mb to handle future applications such as high definition video.

The results for the study were taken from broadband speed test site  speedtest.net.

T-Mobile end laptop and mobile broadband deals

With the launch of T-Mobile mobile broadband gift packs it has signalled the end of T-Mobile offering mobile broadband & laptop deals that have proved very popular.

T-Mobile believe that many people now already have laptops and are looking at other ways that may entice new customers.

New mobile broadband customers can still buy mobile broadband and laptop deals from other mobile broadband providers.

T-Mobile offering mobile broadband gift packs

T-Mobile have moved into gifts as their latest way to sell mobile broadband. What T-Mobile are doing is offering 3 and 12 month gift packs that come complete with a Mobile broadband USB modem and unlimited browsing (checking emails and looking at websites but not watching videos or downloading files) for a one off payment.

The 3 month gift pack costs £44.03 which offers a saving of more than 25% when compared to a comparable pre-pay mobile broadband deal form T-Mobile. The 12 month gift pack comes in at £146.79 which offers a saving of 20%.

The angle that T-Mobile are going for is to keep people connected and in touch with each other, so for example this Christmas instead of people looking for Christmas gifts such as driving experiences they will be hoping people choose a T-Mobile mobile broadband gift pack instead.

The person giving or receiving the gift will do so also not having the worry about any on-going charges as there is just a one off charge up front when they buy the gift and T-Mobile do not charge any extra charges or run-on rates.
