Free home O2 Broadband with iPhone 3G tethering Bolt On

Free O2 broadband is now available with iPhone tethering.

Today marks the days when O2 loses the two year exclusivity rights for selling the Apple iPhone as Orange are now also in the market to sell them.
o2 broadband Free home O2 Broadband with iPhone 3G tethering Bolt OnWith this added extra competition for O2 they are going to have to work harder to get new would-be iPhone customers to choose them over Orange and as such have today (surprising coincidence, or not,  the same day as Orange get to sell the iPhone) launched a new Total Connectivity package that offers customers free home broadband if they sign up for an iPhone tethering 3G data plan.

What this offers customers is that for £9.79 per month, iPhone customers with O2 will receive 3GB of tethering data and also free home O2 broadband.

To receive the free home O2 broadband, O2 iPhone customers need to buy the 3GB Internet Tethering Bolt On by 31st December 2009 to be able to receive the Total Connectivity package.

What the O2 Home broadband standard package offers is up to 8Mb broadband download speeds and 1.3Mb upload, Unlimited usage (fair use policy applies), free wireless router and 100 texts per month. For anyone who wants to choose one of the other O2 Home broadband deals they will receive a £7.34 per month discount on whichever one they choose.

Broadband speeds could make or break a house sale

Broadband speeds can affect the saleability of a house according to the results of a recent survey.

A survey by broadband comparison site ispreview.co.uk has found that 75% would not buy a house if the best broadband speed it could achieve was just 1MB.

The results of the survey also found that 51% would be willing to pay more for a house that had a faster broadband connection.

The most popular minimum broadband speed required for a broadband connection is 4Mb with 61.7% requiring this to be the minimum.

Where fixed line broadband is not available then the most popular alternative would be a fixed Wireless connection with over half (52.5%) giving this as their option, 28.4% said that mobile broadband would be their choice and 19% chose satellite broadband.

These results, although only answered by 721 respondents does go to show that broadband is a highly important part in many peoples lives and it is only going to continue to get more important. We would easily hazard a guess that in a few years form now that if this study is done again then we will be seeing that the minimum broadband speed required will be way above the 4Mb that it currently is now!

Virgin stay top in latest broadband speed test results

The latest set of broadband speed test results for October 2009 compiled by broadband.co.uk still have Virgin Media leading the way with the fastest broadband speeds.

The results are compiled from broadband speed tests that are performed each month for 10 of the most popular broadband providers in the UK.

Virgin were head and shoulders in front by averaging a broadband download speed of 7.328Mb and 2.3Mb faster than O2 & Be Broadband (they use the same infrastructure) who came in second place with 5.019Mb.
Virgin are expected to be at the top as they have a fibre optic broadband network and have a broadband package with a headline speed of 50Mb, we do anticipate that when BT’s fibre network is rolled out that the gap will close slightly.

Coming in slowest was AOL broadband who recorded an average broadband speed of just 2.183Mb with the average across the 10 broadband providers being 4.328Mb.

The broadband provider and their average broadband speed for each are listed below.

Virgin Media – 7.260Mb
O2 ( Be Broadband ) – 5.019Mb
Eclipse Internet – 3.899Mb
Sky Broadband – 3.512Mb
TalkTalk – 3.357Mb
Orange – 3.199
BT – 2.920Mb
Tiscali – 2.770Mb
PlusNet – 2.559Mb
AOL – 2.183Mb

For the first time Virgin Media managed to average over 8Mb broadband speed (8.303Mb) for speed tests taken between midnight and 8am.

Mobile broadband to exceed fixed line broadband by 2011

The popularity and take up of mobile broadband has been amazing, with the numbers of new mobile broadband users mushrooming in the last year.

mobile broadband Mobile broadband to exceed fixed line broadband by 2011It is now believed by some in the industry that by 2011 the number of mobile broadband connections could be more than the number of fixed line broadband connections in the UK.

The popularity of mobile broadband is easy to see, it offers easy and convenient access to the Internet with the freedom to use it when you want to and not being limited to your home, plus the prices of mobile broadband are not huge meaning that it has made it accessible for many.

The thing with mobile broadband is that it is still not able to deliver broadband speeds as fast and as reliable as fixed line broadband, plus with the roll out of next generation fibre broadband taking place it is going to struggle even more to compete with it.

We can’t see mobile broadband replacing fixed line broadband but we do see it as a complementary broadband Internet service that users will make use of when away from the home.

What will make mobile broadband or 3G Internet more popular is that ever increasing bits of technology are being built with the ability to connect to it.
