Free iPlate for BT Broadband customers

BT Broadband customers can now get their hands on the iPlate for free and start benefiting from faster broadband speeds.

i plate Free iPlate for BT Broadband customersThe iPlate, also known now as the “BT Broadband Accelerator” is a device that plugs into your phone socket and cuts out the bell wire in your phone socket by bypassing it. The bell wire attracts electrical interference that can slow up broadband connections with the electrical interference that it attracts.

The benefits can be quite substantial with broadband speeds tests showing that 50% and above speed increases can be achieved in some cases by having the iPlate fitted.

The iPlate is available free to BT Broadband customers although there is a £1.20 postage charge, customers of other broadband providers can however buy the iPlate for under £10 online from places like ebay.

£25 if you cancel your BT Broadband

Any BT Broadband customers who want to end their use of BT Broadband and not switch to another broadband provider will be charged £25, even if they are at the end of their contract.

The £25 charge is only applied to those customers who end their contract with BT, which includes those customers who have completed the minimum contract length with BT, and don’t request to be migrated to another broadband provider with a MAC code.

This charge has increased from £18.11 last month and was spotted and reported by PC Pro magazine.

BT say that it is a technical charge and is only charged to cover this when the correct migration process isn’t used. However there is no charge should a customer move home and BT are unable to supply a service there.

During these recessional times when money is tight it seems a fairly high charge for customers to have to pay if they are having to cancel their broadband due to not being able to afford it any longer for example.

BT want BBC to pay iPlayer bandwidth contributions

BT is calling for the BBC to pay up if they want their iPlayer content to be available over their network. BT say the cost in terms of bandwidth is huge for delivering content for the iPlayer. The iPlayer allows users to watch BBC programmes online via their broadband connection and as it’s popularity continues to grow and more aqnd more broadband users make use of it the more it is costing in bandwidth bills.

BT was found to be throttling iPlayer traffic between 5pm and midnight when demand on the network was at it’s greatest, with users reporting that their broadband speeds dropped considerably when using iPlayer. It is not only BT who have done this, with many other ISPs also doing the same with many also saying that the BBC should pay contributions to the cost for delivering their content.

It would not just be the BBC with the iPlayer that contributions would be requested from, YouTube and other very high traffic video steaming sites could also be asked for contributions.
It is not unfeasible to see that the iPlayer could in future be delivering many peoples television direct into their living rooms  as people choose exactly what they want to watch and when they want to watch it.

One thought is the fact of net neutrality, why should one sites data be throttled and limited to customers and users just because it is popular and other sites get all their data sent at full unrestricted speeds which makes it an un-level playing field.

BT offer free broadband speed increase to 20Mb

BT broadband customers are to have their broadband speeds boosted from 8Mb up to 20Mb as BT upgrades to ADSL2+ technology to their broadband customers.

bt broadband BT offer free broadband speed increase to 20MbBT has been running a trial with 60,000 customers who have been able to enjoy the free broadband speed increase and now they are going to roll this out to more of their network.

To begin with 549 of the telephone exchanges on BT’s 21 CN platform will have the service extended to them, this is around 40% of BT’s network. By March 2010 BT plans to have this extended to cover 55% of their network although this depends up on customer demand for it. We can’t see why any of BT’s 4.8 million broadband customers wouldn’t be wanting to have a large speed increase in their area for free though.

On top of this, BT are also going to offer some of their home and business customers a Broadband Accelerator (I-Plate) for free, that is designed to cut out electrical interference in a line which will increase broadband speeds and reliability.

It is a good move by BT who have in recent months been left behind a bit in the broadband speed front, especially by the likes of Virgin Media who are plugging how fast they can offer broadband on their fibre broadband network and how fast they will be able to offer in future stating headline speeds faster than BT have said there own fibre network will offer.
