Virgin Media average over 9Mb in latest broadband speed tests

The latest set of broadband speed test results from broadband comparison  site broadband.co.uk have been released and show no surprise with Virgin Media still topping the fastest broadband charts.

For the first time however, Virgin Media (www.virginmedia.com) have finally gone through the 9Mb average broadband speed barrier by registering an average broadband speed of 9.373Mb which is over 1.1Mb faster than they were last month and still way ahead of the broadband providers in second place of O2 & Be broadband (Be are owned by O2 and use the same network) who registered an average broadband speed of 5.654Mb.

Virgin Media are currently the safe first spot on these broadband speed tests as they have fibre optic broadband that has a headline speed of 50Mb. However, fibre optic networks are currently being installed by BT across the UK so we should start to hopefully see the broadband speeds start to rise for those broadband providers who use BT’s wholesale network via BT Infinity or another broadband provider.

The full table of the main broadband providers who are featured in the results and what their respective download speeds are is shown below:

  1. Virgin Media – 9.373Mb
  2. O2 & Be Broadband – 5.654Mb
  3. Sky Broadband – 3.734Mb
  4. Orange – 3.682Mb
  5. BT Broadband – 3.582Mb
  6. TalkTalk & Tiscali – 3.511Mb
  7. Eclipse Internet – 3.455Mb
  8. PlusNet – 2.811Mb
  9. AOL – 2.251Mb

The average broadband speed recorded from all the broadband providers was 4.958Mb so we would expect that next month we will finally see the average broadband speed hit the 5Mb marker which if so will have taken 13 months to achieve form when it finally went over the 4Mb mark.
Largely this will be down to Virgin Media who have in the last year added 3Mb to their average broadband speed, however O2/Be Broadband have actually gone backwards in the last year by being around 0.4Mb slower.

The average broadband upload speeds were also measured and the average across all the broadband providers was 0.482Mb, it is actually O2/Be who lead the way on the uploading speeds with Virgin Media in second place.

  1. O2 & Be Broadband – 0.729Mb
  2. Virgin Media – 0.594Mb
  3. Sky Broadband – 0.475Mb
  4. Orange – 0.448Mb
  5. BT Broadband – 0.401Mb
  6. TalkTalk/Tiscali – 0.348Mb
  7. Eclipse Internet – 0.396Mb
  8. PlusNet – 0.337Mb
  9. AOL – 0.319Mb

Virgin Media & Vodafone win broadband speed awards

The broadband comparison site Top10Broadband.co.uk ran it’s annual broadband awards last night.

Their results for winners were based on 1.5 million customer ratings and 400,000 broadband speed tests that they ran and helped them decide who should win each of the 11 categories that were done.

In the broadband speeds stakes the fastest home broadband award was picked up by Virgin Media while Vodafone mobile broadband picked up the fastest mobile broadband award and the best rated mobile broadband award.

The full list of winners and their respective categories were:

  • Best Rated Home Broadband: O2
  • Best Wireless Broadband: BT
  • Best Broadband & TV: Sky
  • Best Broadband & Laptop: Orange
  • Fastest Home Broadband: Virgin Media
  • Fastest Mobile Broadband: Vodafone
  • Best value Mobile Broadband: 3
  • Best Rated Mobile Broadband: Vodafone
  • Best Broadband & Phone: TalkTalk
  • Best Value Home Broadband: Plusnet
  • Best Innovation Award: Virgin Media

It is nice to see that the winners were fairly varied with a good range of broadband providers winning categories and not being dominated by one broadband provider.
The two mobile broadband awards were won by Vodafone but with competition in this area becoming ever more competitive and the technology advancing well we still expect the other mobile broadband providers to be not too far behind.

Latest set of broadband speed test results unsurprisingly show fibre broadband leading the way

The latest monthly broadband speed test results have been released for the month of June from broadband comparison website broadband.co.uk.
As is the trend with the previous results we yet again see a slight increase in the average broadband speed that we receive, with this time the average speed being 4.34Mb which is up 0.092 Mb from 4.248 Mb in May.
There is also a tiny increase in the upload speed which now stands at 0.433 Mb.

Virgin Media top the charts showing an average broadband speed of 6.135 Mb, but as they run their own fibre broadband network they are able to offer much faster speeds than the other broadband providers who are still using ADSL and ADSL2+ technology. The headline deal from Virgin Media offers 50Mb broadband!

The second fastest broadband provider is once again O2 Broadband (who also own Be Broadband), however their average broadband speed actually fell very slightly last month to 5.632 Mb, although their upload speed has a very healthy average of 0.748 Mb, which is hugely faster then their next nearest rival, TalkTalk, who have an upload speed of 0.481 Mb.
O2 are an LLU operator and use ADSL2+ technology which means they have advertised maximum speeds of up to 20Mb.

Once again it was AOL broadband who performed slowest knocking up an average broadband speed of just 2.143 Mb.

To test the speed your broadband works at you need to use a free and simple broadband speed test that will show your download and upload speeds so you can see how you fair.

The broadband providers tested are the 10 largest and most users broadband providers which is why some of the smaller ones don’t feature in the results.
