Virgin Media provide mobile backhaul for Orange, T-Mobile & Three

Virgin Media is to provide faster mobile broadband and more bandwidth for mobile broadband provided by Orange, T-Mobile & Three in a £100m 8 year deal announced yesterday.

The deal between Virgin Media Business and Mobile Broadband Network Limited (MBNL) will provide the UK’s first synchronous Ethernet mobile backhaul service which will mean customers who are with the previously mentioned mobile broadband providers will get access to faster mobile data with greater capacity.

MBNL is made up of Everything Everywhere (which itself was created when T-Mobile & Orange joined back in 2007) and Three Mobile UK and it is a 50/50 split between them.

As part of the £100m deal, Virgin Media will set up 14 regional aggregation networks which will be used to connect the base stations located around the country to Virgin’s fibre services.

Virgin’s network will offer good foundations for the roll-out of 4G and LTE services with it’s synchronous Gigabit Ethernet service and it will be able to future proof itself going forward as it will be able to scale up it’s offering as and when demand requires it to.

Neil Berkett, Virgin Media’s Chief Executive, said:

“Being connected all the time to social networks, the internet and their favourite apps is very much a basic expectation which operators need to deliver on. Investing now means they’ll be able to deal with the escalating data demands of today and tomorrow.”

Previously BT was the main mobile backhaul provider and it will come as a huge blow to them that 3 of the UK’s largest mobile broadband brands will now be using Virgin Media’s fibre network as apposed to their own.

T-Mobile end laptop and mobile broadband deals

With the launch of T-Mobile mobile broadband gift packs it has signalled the end of T-Mobile offering mobile broadband & laptop deals that have proved very popular.

T-Mobile believe that many people now already have laptops and are looking at other ways that may entice new customers.

New mobile broadband customers can still buy mobile broadband and laptop deals from other mobile broadband providers.

T-Mobile offering mobile broadband gift packs

T-Mobile have moved into gifts as their latest way to sell mobile broadband. What T-Mobile are doing is offering 3 and 12 month gift packs that come complete with a Mobile broadband USB modem and unlimited browsing (checking emails and looking at websites but not watching videos or downloading files) for a one off payment.

The 3 month gift pack costs £44.03 which offers a saving of more than 25% when compared to a comparable pre-pay mobile broadband deal form T-Mobile. The 12 month gift pack comes in at £146.79 which offers a saving of 20%.

The angle that T-Mobile are going for is to keep people connected and in touch with each other, so for example this Christmas instead of people looking for Christmas gifts such as driving experiences they will be hoping people choose a T-Mobile mobile broadband gift pack instead.

The person giving or receiving the gift will do so also not having the worry about any on-going charges as there is just a one off charge up front when they buy the gift and T-Mobile do not charge any extra charges or run-on rates.

t mobile broadband T Mobile broadband named best mobile broadbandThe independent survey was done by P3 Solutions who tested the services of all the UK mobile broadband providers to come to their conclusion after testing the speed, performance and consistency at 16 cities across the UK.

It is the third quarter on the trot that T-Mobile broadband has come out on top. The survey found T-Mobile were fastest for downloading, uploading and also had the fastest average performance for email.

Emin Gurdenli, Chief Technology Officer, T-Mobile UK, said:

This programme of regular, independent testing is playing a crucial role in helping us improve and shape our Mobile Broadband service. The fact that we have come out top for three quarters in a row shows this approach is yielding real benefits to customers in terms of improved network performance and reliability. This has been achieved at a time of unprecedented growth in the number of our mobile broadband customers, which has driven an increase in total data traffic of more than 300% since mobile broadband hit the market in late 2007.

It was only a few weeks ago that T-Mobile also topped the charts in a study done by YouGov into mobile broadband, with T-Mobile coming top in 6 out of 13 categories.
